INTRODUCTION
Everyone is talking about essential oils these days. You can find ample information on them from a variety of media sources that explore their roles in herbal medicine, mindfulness, natural body care, functional medicine, and the practice of Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. But the real challenge is trusting the information you find. Who is writing it? What’s their experience?
We’ve been around a long time, and we have garnered respect from scholars and thought leaders in the field of aromatherapy and beyond. Our students come from around the world. They find us because they want an honest, scholarly, innovative, fun, and balanced approach to learning how to use these remarkable materials.
Our approach is simple:
We first celebrate the joy and beauty of the aromas of essential oils. That initial profound connection opens our minds and our hearts to the power (and science) of their medicine. We invite everyone who smells an essential oil to join our mission to connect with our sense of smell and observe how olfaction impacts our well-being and our relationships with plants and with our world.

Musculoskeletal System: Essential oils, carrier oils, or herbal oils can be selected to:
- relieve joint pain

THE HEALING POWERS OF AROMA
Aromatics (e.g., essential oils, CO2 s, and absolutes) can:
- reduce or alleviate stress and anxiety
- relieve pain by altering pain perception in the brain
- be used for weight control or loss
- help alleviate nausea
- affect and improve mood and increase overall emotional well-being
- be a useful stress management tool due to impact on the autonomic nervous system
- ease physical ailments, particularly stress-related disorders
- help shape our impressions of self and others.
WHAT DETERMINES OUR GENERAL REACTION TO A PARTICULAR AROMA?
Aromas do not by definition have a positive or negative influence, nor does a specific aroma elicit a specific mood. Smell-evoked emotions and behavior evolve out of experiences that occur in the presence of those aromas. For an aroma to have meaning, an individual must develop a relationship with it based upon associations and actual experiences.
Some factors that determine our general reaction to an aroma or smell are:
- previous experience of that aroma or one of a similar aroma
- our current emotional state when exposed to the odor/aroma
- whether the aroma is perceived as pleasant or unpleasant
- any auto-suggested relations (e.g., this oil is known to be relaxing or anxiety relieving)
- most importantly, the environment in which the aroma is introduced.
KATAFRAY
Katafray (Cedrelopsis grevei, Rutaceae) essential oil is steam distilled using the bark of the katafray tree. Prized for its ability to relieve muscular aches and pains, katafray also soothes and calms tension and irritability.
